Petra de Wit

I worked in the hairdressing industry for 20 years. During that time, I took all sorts of courses – child psychology, marketing; I find many things interesting. When my husband and I bought a house in 2008, I thought: “Great, now I’ll take an interior design course.” I drew up a whole plan for it. “This is a business plan,” my husband said. Within a week, I made my decision. I was going to do it.

And that is how I started as an interior designer. I learned everything through hands-on experience, took courses and seminars, read books, and did research online. I simply asked people: “May I do this for you, and may I take some photos?” That is how I built my business from the ground up.

Always learning something new
I enjoy working in an organized, structured way; it keeps my mind calm and creates space for deeper exploration. I need that depth – time and time again. In the early years, everything feels exciting, but if you want to grow, you have to make choices and delve into every aspect of your business. How do I shape my company? How do I present myself? What is my style, my methodology? I am always striving to learn something new; it’s simply part of the path I’ve chosen.

“You have to dare to invest in yourself.”

My business is currently going through a phase of transformation. I have devised and developed a new, unique approach: the “wardrobe method.” By analyzing a few select outfits, I work with clients to uncover their personal style, which then extends to their interior spaces as well. The days of focusing solely on interior design are behind me; I now call myself a “style coach” and offer “Understand Your Style” sessions, both one-on-one and through online courses.

What’s next?
Choosing a new direction for your business is exciting. It’s almost like starting all over again. I had my doubts… is the ‘wardrobe method’ too superficial? Should I really keep going with this? Will people actually find it interesting? I received a lot of positive feedback, so I knew I was on the right track. But where do I go from here?

Fortunately, I can always bounce ideas around with Marie-Gon. I’ve taken quite a few workshops and courses in the past, some with her, too. She’s incredibly creative, just like me, yet she still manages to offer ideas that I wouldn’t have come up with on my own. She knows the business, she knows me, she listens well, and she really engages with my challenges. With her, I’m able to dive deep. At the end of every session with Marie-Gon, I have a clear list of what I need to do. That provides focus, otherwise, in my enthusiasm, I might end up heading in all sorts of different directions.

Investing in yourself
Get coached. Marie-Gon is simply very good at it. And yes, it costs money. You have to be willing to invest in yourself. If you don’t get coached, you simply won’t make much progress. Either it will take much longer, or you’ll eventually give up, because you don’t really know how to approach things, and that only makes you feel more insecure.

Marie-Gon has already walked this path, so there’s no need for you to reinvent the wheel. She supports you, sharing her knowledge as well as her contacts and go-to resources. It’s incredibly valuable. You’ll focus on exactly the right things, ensuring that your enthusiasm and creativity don’t end up turning your business into a chaotic mess. Working with Marie-Gon means making real progress. It’s about taking action.
